RecycleRight Volunteer

Description

The City of San Luis Obispo's Utilities Department has an exciting opportunity for community members who want to see a cleaner, greener, more sustainable SLO and take action! The Utilities Department's Solid Waste & Recycling Program seeks volunteers to serve as Recycle Right Volunteers—community advocates for recycling, organics, and waste reduction.

Volunteers are trained to be sustainability coaches at the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market on select Thursday evenings. Their role is to guide the public on how to properly sort waste—especially organics—into the City’s new organics green carts. This simple action helps keep food scraps and other compostable materials out of the landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the City’s Climate Action goals.

Upcoming Volunteer Shifts – be sure to hit "RESPOND" to all you can attend. If you need help registering, please contact the Volunteer Program Coordinator ([email protected]) or call/text (805) 858-0771 at least two weeks before your shift.

Training:

RecycleRight Volunteers must complete a short 15-minute online training before their shift/s.

Click here for the video link.

Volunteers will walk away from training with a clear understanding of how to be successful in their role, including how to coach the public on proper sorting of waste (volunteers do not handle waste directly, don't worry!).

What We Provide:

To ensure a safe, healthy and fun experience, volunteers will be provided with a safety vest and name badge, a clipboard with FAQ sheet, and Utilities Department business cards. Please view the RecylceRight Volunteer Position Description for additional details on this advocacy role like expectations and responsibilities. Registered volunteers will receive confirmation details, including meeting location and their City contact, a few business days before their scheduled shift.
